A pancake type load cell is a precision electromechanical transducer designed for the accurate measurement of static and dynamic forces in compression and/or tension. The load cell features a low-profile, circular (disc-shaped) geometry, which enables installation in confined spaces while maintaining high mechanical strength and measurement stability.

The sensing element is manufactured from high-strength alloy steel or stainless steel, carefully heat-treated to ensure elastic behavior within the rated load range. The internal structure is optimized using stress-analysis techniques to concentrate strain in controlled regions. Foil strain gauges are bonded at these high-strain locations and interconnected in a full Wheatstone bridge configuration, providing high sensitivity, temperature compensation, and excellent common-mode noise rejection.

When an external force is applied, the elastic deformation of the sensing element causes a proportional change in the resistance of the strain gauges. This results in a differential millivolt output (mV/V) proportional to the applied load when excited with a stable DC voltage. The output signal is suitable for amplification using precision instrumentation amplifiers or load cell indicators.

Performance Characteristics

Pancake load cells offer high accuracy, low deflection, and excellent long-term stability. Their compact design ensures uniform stress distribution and minimizes bending moments, making them ideal for applications requiring precise force measurement under constrained mounting conditions.

The load cells are calibrated at the factory according to international standards, ensuring linear response across the full rated capacity. Compensation techniques are applied to reduce the effects of non-linearity, hysteresis, creep, and temperature variation.

The load cell body is precision-machined from high-grade alloy steel or corrosion-resistant stainless steel. Its internal stress pattern is carefully controlled through geometric profiling to ensure predictable strain behavior under load. Metal foil strain gauges are permanently bonded to critical strain zones and connected in a balanced Wheatstone bridge circuit, enabling accurate conversion of mechanical force into a low-level electrical output.

 

When powered by a regulated DC excitation voltage, the load cell generates an output signal proportional to the applied force, expressed in millivolts per volt (mV/V). A pancake type load cell is a low-profile, circular force sensor designed to measure compression and/or tension forces with high accuracy. Its compact “pancake” shape allows it to be installed in applications where space is limited while maintaining excellent load-measuring performance.

These load cells typically use strain gauge technology, bonded to a metal elastic element. When force is applied, the strain gauges deform proportionally, producing an electrical signal that corresponds to the applied load.

Pancake load cells are widely used in industrial weighing, material testing machines, presses, robotics, and force monitoring systems. They offer high stiffness, good overload capacity, and stable output over long periods.
